1936 Mercedes Benz 290 Cabriolet A Restoration: SOLD

1936 Mercedes Benz 290 Cab A Chassis built in Mannheim; Body built in Sindelfingen Karosserie Daimler Benz, A.G.

Chassis: #121170 - Body: #817409 - Engine: #U98535

Documented history since purchased by Herman Reuter in Germany in 1949 including period photos of the car in Germany and all correspondence with Mercedes and receipts for parts. Dismantled in 1954 for restoration but instead placed in storage in a Detroit warehouse where it remained until 2010 when purchased by current owner.

The entire car was restored using many NOS parts that were purchased in the '50's. All chrome pieces and most wood sections have the body # stamped on the back. Very few 290’s were built with the Cabriolet A body style. With the 6 cylinder engine they are shorter, lighter, and more suited for handling twisting mountain roads than the heavier and more powerful supercharged 500K and 540K Mercedes at home on the autobahn. Built at the same time as the 8 cylinder cars 290 CabA’s were about half the price of a 540K Special Roadster but with many similar features.

This car was a trophy winner at 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in the pre-war Mercedes class; the first 290 to be on the podium in the 63 year history of Pebble Beach.
